On Saturday, September 13, Ommen opens its doors for one of the best days of the year: Open Monumentendag. From 10.00 to 16.00 hours you can walk into places that normally remain closed. You will discover sturdy mills, intimate churches, special museums and even a castle. Each building whispers its own story and together they tell the rich history of Ommen.

All activities are free of charge and routes are waiting for you. So put on your walking shoes, take your bike or hop on board: Open Monumentendag in Ommen is the moment to see your own city or region with new eyes. For more information, visit the Open Monumentendag website.

  1. Starting point: Cultural History Museum Den Oordt

Begin your day at the Cultural History Museum at Den Oordt. Here you’ll find a lively regional market full of traditional crafts and treats, live music, and of course the program booklet. From here, you can easily set off on a beautiful cycling or walking route that takes you past all the monuments opening their doors.

  2. Museums: grand stories in small details

At the National Tin Figures Museum, located in the former town hall (1828), you’ll dive into a world of miniatures that tell entire histories. Or stop by the Historic Bicycle Museum, where old bicycles turn out to be more than just means of transport: they are time machines on two wheels.

  3. Mills: turning icons of Ommen

The five mills set their sails in motion. At De Konijnenbelt (1806), Den Oordt (1824), De Lelie (1846), the Vilsterse Mill (1858), and the Besthmener Mill (1864), you’ll experience how wind power has been grinding flour and bringing local products to life for centuries. There’s often something extra to enjoy too: from tastings to activities for young and old.

  4. Churches: places of silence and encounter

The Reformed Brigitta Church, the oldest building in Ommen, breathes history. The Reformed Church (1932) shows how faith and architecture enhance each other, and in the Roman Catholic St. Brigitta Church (1938/1939) you’ll experience a welcoming atmosphere, often accompanied by beautiful music.

  5. Eerde Castle: grandeur in the greenery

On the Eerde estate stands this impressive castle, surrounded by forests and tree-lined avenues. A unique opportunity to step inside a place that is normally only partly accessible.

  6. Bonus: onto the Vecht

This year, the Ommer Vechtzomp Hanseatic City Ommen sails at a reduced fare. Step aboard and see Ommen from the water, while the guide tells you about the history of shipping and life along the Vecht River.
