Starting April 11, more than 2,000 wooden hearts will color the center of Ommen. Each heart symbolizes one day of World War II until the liberation of Ommen on April 11, 1945. All elementary school children from the municipality of Ommen have been busy decorating the hearts in recent weeks. Residents of the Vlierhuis, Oldenhagen and Nijenhagen also participate in the project.

The hearts project is an initiative of the center entrepreneurs from Ommen, in cooperation with culture coach Petra Stokvisch and Stichting Marketing Ommen. Students from Vechtdal College lasered the heart shapes out of wood. The works of art were then decorated by hand by young and old - with personal wishes, drawings, thoughts and small works of art.
Freedom depicted in hearts
On Friday, April 11, exactly 80 years after the liberation of Ommen, the first garland of hearts will be hung on the Market in Ommen. Acting mayor Tjeerd van der Zwan will do this together with group 3 and 5 of the Johan Seckelschool and a number of volunteers of the Ommer Bissingh. For the time being, the hearts will remain visible in the center of Ommen - on tension cables, in the trees and around the church - and together they will form one large and colorful work of art. The hearts project is part of the program 80 years of freedom for us, with which Ommen commemorates, connects and celebrates in 2025.
