When the "r" is in the month, there is one delicacy in Ommen that every gourmet looks forward to: the Zûte Plassies. This traditional syrup roll is unique to Ommen and available at local bakeries during the last months of the year. As far as we are concerned, a real must-try in Ommen!

A bite of history

The Zûte Plassies have been an important part of the Ommer food culture since 1878. A rightfully historic snack, then! The story goes that baker Makkinga was the first to introduce these syrup rolls. Other bakers in Ommen soon followed, each with their own twist, but with the same name: Zûte Plassies. The roll, originally eaten around the holidays of St. Nicholas, soon became popular as a midwinter treat.

The name actually gives away a lot about its contents: "zûte" stands for sweet and "plassie" means roll. The unique flavor is created by a combination of syrup and anise, which of course perfectly suits winter moods. Traditionally, anise seed was widely used at this time of year, so the addition to this luxurious sandwich is not a crazy choice.

A sandwich full of tradition

Zûte Plassies are much more than just a sandwich; they are a tradition. Ommen residents who live outside the city come back to their native region even at this time of year especially to stock up on this delicacy. And the bakers? They -literally- see them fly over the counter like sweet rolls.

Why you must taste this sweet roll

The Zûte Plassies are not just a delicacy, they represent a piece of Ommer history. They were created at a time when bakers in the region had to be creative to stand out among the competition. The result: a unique party bread that is still loved generations later. Just as cities like Den Bosch are proud of their Bossche bollen, Ommen has this iconic syrup roll as its own specialty.

With a diameter of about 6 centimeters and a height of 4 centimeters, the Zûte Plassie has a recognizable honeycomb structure. Its golden-brown exterior and soft gray-ochre interior (is your mouth watering yet?) make it not only delicious, but also pleasing to the eye! Spread a little butter on it, and you have a perfect treat with coffee or tea.

Where to find

Fortunately, you don't have to look far: the Zûte Plassies are available at bakeries in Ommen. Tip: Don't wait too long, because demand is high and supplies are limited.

Enjoy it!
