The municipality of Ommen naturally has many beautiful (natural) areas that are gratefully used by many hiking and cycling enthusiasts every year. Even if you live here yourself, you can still marvel at the unique, sometimes undiscovered places in the area. Many of these places also have a rich history, which is by no means always known. So go explore and walk into history with these 3 tips! The three special hiking trails take you past historical places where the past is still a bit tangible. Put on your walking shoes, dive into history and discover hidden stories of Ommen during a beautiful autumn or winter walk!

1. Walking tour "Old Footprints" in the Ommerschans↵.

Go back in time with the walking tour Old Footprints in Ommerschans. This route takes you past historic farmsteads and remnants of the beggar's colony. Here you will experience, while enjoying the beautiful surroundings, how this area served as a line of defense during the Eighty Years' War against the Spaniards and later became part of the Society of Weldadigheid, with the moat and the old entrance gate as silent witnesses. The stories you discover here really bring Ommen's history to life. You can find these and other beautiful walking and cycling tours around the Ommerschans here ↵. Starting point: Ommerschans

2. Around Eerde Castle: from robber knight to baron↵.

A walk around the impressive Eerde Castle is a journey through centuries-old stories and beautiful nature. Once stood the wooden "robbers' den" of the notorious robber knight Evert van Essen. In 1380 the bishop of Utrecht put an end to this by burning down the robbers' den. The current castle dates from 1715, built by Johan Werner, Baron van Pallandt. Special about this place? Among other things, the symmetrical lane structure he designed in the landscape, which even reflects musical proportions. And there is much more to tell about the rich history of this unique estate, but for that we recommend you put on your walking shoes and go exploring! Via Natuurmonumenten you can download (free) walking routes ↵. Location: Castle Eerde (and surroundings).
